There are two types of databases commonly used in academic research:

  • Bibliographic Database - contains citations and subject headings for publications such as books, periodical articles, videotapes or government documents, but not the full-text of the cited articles. Searching this type of database is at least a two-step project, as you need to leave the database to locate the text of the book or article you desire.
  • Full-text Database - contains the complete text of a work, such as an article, book, poem, or essay in the database itself.
  • An Increasing number of databases contain a combination of both bibliographic and full-text records.
