Requesting Items & Placing Holds

Requesting items - This service allows you to request that our library staff fetch a particular item (book, DVD, CD, etc.) that you desire and have it waiting for you at either the Library's Circulation desk or at the George Harvey Center desk without coming into the library to look for the item yourself. Extended Campus students can have the selected item sent to their home addresses.

Holds - This service allows you to place a hold on an item that is currently checked out. This guarantees that you will get the item once it is returned. When you place a hold on an item it may be recalled and assigned an earlier due date than the date assigned at check-out. You will be notified when the item has been returned and is being held for you at the Circulation Desk.

    To request or place a hold on an item

    1. Search the McConnell Library catalog
    2. Identify an item you want.
    3. Click on the "Request" button to request that the item be sent to you. If the item does not have a "Request" button it is either part of the library's Reference Collection, part of the Special Collection or an E- Book. Reference and Special Collection items do not leave the library, so you can not request these items. An E-Book is an electronic book and can be read online. Note: If the status of an item does NOT say available that item is not currently on the library's shelves and will not be sent immediately. A hold will be placed on the item and when it is available it will be sent to you.


    4. Enter your RU name and password (the same as used for your RU email account).
      Select the option that you desire in the "Choose a Pickup Location" pull-down menu. You will see three options: Circulation Desk (This options means you will pick the item up at the Circulation Desk when it is ready), George Harvey Center (You will pick the item up at the Harvey Center Desk when it is ready) or Home Address - Ext. Campus Only (Extended Education students and faculty can have the item mailed to their homes). Click "Submit."

    5. The following should display.



    6. You will receive an email when your item is ready for pick-up.
    7. If you wish to make sure your hold has gone through go to the McConnell Library catalog and click on:
      Login to the system and click on "Requests." You also have the option to renew items online here by clicking on "Checked Out Items."
