Searching a Journal for an Article
These instructions will tell you how to locate a specific article when you are searching an online journal. You will need to do this if you have clicked on a"Journal" link from a screen like the one below, or have tried unsuccessfully to click on an "Article" link or you searched for a particular journal in the "Titles of journals, magazines and newspapers" list.
The way you locate an article is a little different for each provider (Provider name is indicated under “Provided by”, in the case above it is “International Index to the Performing Arts.” for the "Journal" link. )
In order to locate your article you will need to make note of the volume number, issue number and date of your article. [An exception is LexisNexis and Factiva. If you are looking for an article in LexisNexis click here.]

If you are searching the Journal of Popular Culture you will see a screen like the one on the right below.
In this particular example the issues are organized in the format of volume number: issue number (date). You would scroll down to volume 37, then find issue 2.
You then search the issue for your article. Hint: articles are arranged by page number.

LexisNexis
lf you are looking for an article in LexisNexis your search will be a little different. Determine that LexisNexis is the only online provider (This is the case if LexisNexis is the only item listed under “Provided by” or if “McConnell Library” is the only other item listed there.)
In the example below you will be searching for the article “Four rules for saving a fraternity” in the journal The Chronicle of Higher Education. To search this journal click on the word “Journal” under “Take me to.

You will now be ready to search the journal. Under “Step Five: Search this publication title(s)” note that you are searching the Chronicle of Higher Education. You now need to enter the title of your article.

Enter your article title under "Step Three" in the search box. If the title is very long you may want to only enter a few words from the title. Click on the red “Search” button.

Click on the article title in order to view the full-text of the article.

Troubleshooting:
If you don’t find your article try the following:
- If you didn’t enter the full title do so.
Occasionally a title has been typed incorrectly into a database. Options on finding it are here:
- If you entered the full title try entering only part of the title, in this case you might try “Four Rules” or“Saving a Fraternity.”
- Try playing around with different parts of the title.
- If this doesn’t work try searching for keywords from the title:
LexisNexis includes most but not all articles from a journal. It may be the case that this article is not available through LexisNexis. If that is the case and we only have the article through LexisNexis request it through InterLibrary Loan.
