McConnell Library has two computer classrooms: Classroom A (room 350), located around the corner from the reference desk, and Classroom B (room 380), located in the northwest corner. Both are on the third level of the building. Classroom A has 20 computers and can accommodate up to 40 students; Classroom B has 24 computers and can accommodate up to 46 students.
Use of the Classrooms for Library Instruction
Because the library classrooms were developed to meet our instructional needs, priority is given to scheduling the classrooms for instruction by librarians. To schedule a course-related library instruction session, complete the online form at least one week prior to the desired date of instruction. The Reference/Instruction librarians are available to discuss options for instruction and assist in choosing the most appropriate sources relevant to the needs of your course.
Faculty Use of the Library Classrooms
During the first six weeks of the fall and spring semester and during Maymester, the library classrooms are restricted to librarian-led instruction . After this time, faculty members may reserve the classrooms for library-related uses. Examples would include a UNIV100 class completing the library exercise, or a Core 102 class holding a research day. These are generally self-taught by the faculty member rather than by a librarian. The faculty member reserving the classroom must be present during the session.
The library classrooms may not be used for non-library computer instruction, such as an online test, review of a software application or DVD viewing. We suggest using Walker labs for such instruction.
The library classrooms can be reserved no more than three sessions per semester for any individual class. (Librarian-led classes do not count towards these limits.) A library classroom cannot be reserved as the regular meeting place for a class.
We require 24 hours notice for self-reservations.
Other University Use of the Library Classrooms
During the summer and academic breaks, other university office and departments can hold training sessions in the library classrooms. Offices and departments can reserve the rooms up to three times during the summer. In general, all-day reservations cannot be accommodated during May and late August because of high demand for library instruction.
The library classrooms must be reserved at least 24 hours prior to the date the room is needed. No software may be installed on the classroom computers without two weeks notice and approval of the library’s Technology Department.
Other Student Use of the Library Classrooms
When not in use for library instruction or reserved by faculty, the library classrooms may be open for general use by students. Students may consult with the staff at the reference desk or student proctors about hardware and software related questions, but because the library staff is not trained to support computer software, students may be advised to go to the Computer Help Desk in Walker Hall for instruction or assistance.
Because of instructional demands, students may be asked to leave the classroom on short notice.
Cell phone use is prohibited in the classrooms.
