Archivist

Radford University seeks an experienced, enthusiastic and proactive librarian to join its public services team and provide leadership for McConnell Library’s archival collections. This is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial archivist to participate in the design and development of an archives and special collections reading room and related facilities.

The Archivist is charged with managing the acquisition and accessioning of appropriate materials for the archives and building suitable collections with regional interest. This position works closely with the Appalachian Collection Librarian to identify, procure and provide access to primary resources of regional interest. This is a twelve-month non-tenured professional faculty position, which includes supervision of staff, responsibilities for university service, and professional contributions. The Archivist reports to the Coordinator of Public Services.

Responsibilities: Plans, organizes, preserves, manages and evaluates all aspects of McConnell Library’s archival collections; assists in the development and evaluation of special collections services, collections and programs; identifies, acquires and processes manuscripts, books and materials in other formats relating to the mission of the university; provides specialized research services for the archives; organizes, catalogs, and describes holdings in all formats by creating MARC, EAD and web-based descriptive records; holds primary responsibility for production of the department’s digital projects; promotes the use of collections by students, faculty, and scholars through instruction, exhibits, publications and other means; participates in general reference services; initiates and supports outreach, liaison and marketing programs; participates on library and university committees. This position will include some evening and weekend hours.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MLS or equivalent library degree from an ALA-accredited institution, with a concentration in archival studies or working experience in archives. Demonstrated knowledge of standard archival principles and practices; preservation issues; acquisition, organization and access issues related to institutional archives and special collections; issues and challenges of digital preservation and archiving; and standards-based metadata and related schemes. Experience in reference services, integrated library systems, web-authoring tools and new information technologies. Instruction experience in the use of primary source materials. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment, to take initiative, and to follow through with all responsibilities and assigned tasks. COMPENSATION:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, education and experience.

Professional Faculty are twelve month, non-tenured faculty with responsibilities for university service and professional development/contributions.
