Tent Village
ca. 1920s

| Radford has run a summer session from the first summer it
was open (in 1914) to the present. In 1923, when
housing on the campus and in the city were exhausted, separate tent villages were set up.
Sixty army tents were bought by the college and set up on the campus in two villages, one
for men (James Hoge Tyler Camp) and one for women (Willie Gray Allen Village). The
villages had a central street with a water spigot serving as the town pump. The tent
house was constructed with a wooden floor and a thirty inch side wall of wood with canvas
sides and top. Each tent was furnished with a bed, washstand or dresser, a table and
several chairs. Water was piped to the tent villages and toilet facilities were
provided in the nearby dormitories. Source: Moffett, M'Ledge. History of the State Teachers College Radford Virginia 1910-1930. Kingsport, TN: Kingsport Press. 1932. p. 116 |
