David Wilbur Peters,
Radford College
1938-1951

| Born in Franklin County, Va., Dr. David Wilbur Peters (1938-1951) received
his undergraduate degree from Roanoke College in Roanoke, Virginia. He received both his
M.A. and Ph.D degrees from Columbia University in New York. Dr. Peters was no stranger to
Radford when appointed president. He had visited the campus many times as a member of the
State Department of Education. His professional career also included several teaching and administrative positions in Campbell County and Richmond. He was married to Anne Bruce of Rockbridge County. During his tenure as president, Dr. Peters oversaw the transition of Radford to the Women's Division of V.P.I. and guided the school through tremendous post-World War II growth. Dr. Peters died suddenly in August of 1951. M'Ledge Moffett, Treasurer Sylvester McConnell, and Registrar Jeremy Pate Whitt cooperated in running the presidency until Charles Martin took office in January 1952.
