Presbyterian Church

fairfaxhallarrows.gif (593255 bytes)

The men's Sunday School class is standing in front of the Tyler Memorial Presbyterian Church circa 1940.  Originally built in 1892, the church was dedicated in July, 1897 as the Radford Central Presbyterian Church.  In 1934, the name was changed to Tyler Memorial Presbyterian Church in memory of James Hoge Tyler, Governor of Virginia from 1898 to 1902 and a Ruling Elder in the church from May 1, 1894 until his death on January 3, 1925.

After the building was sold to the University it was first named after Charles Martin, 3rd president of Radford.  The name was later changed to Fairfax Hall and now houses the university's Departments of Religion and Philosophy.

The picture was loaned for scanning by Mildred Duncan, a long-time employee of Radford University and the wife of Earl Duncan and daughter-in-law of Levi Duncan.  Both men are in this picture.
