2011 Winesett Book Collecting Contest Winners

Winners of the 2011 Winesett Book Collecting Contest were announced on November 15, 2011 at an awards ceremony at McConnell Library.

The winners were:
  • First Place:  Amanda Vosloh for her collection “My Young Adult Fiction Collection: A Compilation of the Books that Made Me Who I am and a Tribute to My Mother.” Essay
  • Second Place: Emily Walker for her collection “A Canon of Faith and Wonder.”Essay
  • Honorable Mention: Claire Hall, for her collection “Strong Women in Fiction.”
  • Honorable Mention: Christine Watts for her collection “Through Different Eyes.”

     

First Place winner Amanda Vosloh is eligible to enter the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest, which includes a first prize of $2,500, a second prize of $1,000, and a third prize of $500. More details about the National contest are available here.

Judges for the 2011 Book Collecting Contest were Gene Hyde, Alison Armstrong, and Alyssa Archer from McConnell Library, Dr. Donald Secreast of the RU English Department, and Dr. Carlee Bradbury of the RU Art Department. Professor Emeritus Charles L. Hayes of the RU Theatre Department was the guest speaker. The opening remarks and announcement of the winners is available here.

Winners of the 2010 Winesett Book Collecting Contest were announced on December 10, 2010, at an awards ceremony at McConnell Library.

The winners were:
  • First Place: Vanessa Morris, for her collection "Signs of Our Ideas Only." Essay
  • Second Place: Jed Stalker, for his collection "Poems."Essay 
  • Honorable Mention: Brenta Blevins, for her collection “Banned Books.”
  • Honorable Mention: Kimberly Matthews, for her collection "A Collection of Firsts"

     

First Place winner Vanessa Morris is eligible to enter the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest. The National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest is only open to winners of college and university book collecting contests - such as the Winesett Book Collecting Contest - and includes a first prize of $2,500, a second prize of $1,000, and a third prize of $500. Judges for the 2010 Book Collecting Contest were Gene Hyde, Sarah Smith, and Polly Archer from McConnell Library, Dr. Jeffrey Willner of the RU Psychology Department, and Dr. Erin Webster-Garrett of the RU English Department. Dr. Carlee Bradbury of the RU Art Department was the guest speaker.

Winners of the 2009 Winesett Book Collecting Contest were announced on January 22, 2010, at an awards ceremony at McConnell Library.

The winners were:
  • First Place:  Daniel Brookman, for his collection “Of Fraternity and Academia.” Essay.
  • Second Place:  Amanda Lilly, for her collection “English History and Tudor Monarchs.”Essay.
  • Honorable Mention: Brenta Blevins, for her collection “Science Fiction Book Collection.”
  • Honorable Mention: Matt Prater, for his collection “Favorites in Appalachian Literature.”

First Place winner Daniel Brookman will be eligible to enter the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest. The National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest is only open to winners of college and university book collecting contests - such as the Winesett Book Collecting Contest - and includes a first prize of $2,500, a second prize of $1,000, and a third prize of $500. An award ceremony for the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest will be held at the Library of Congress during the fall of 2010. More details about the National contest are available here.

Judges for the 2009 Book Collecting Contest were Gene Hyde, Steve Helm, and Polly Archer from McConnell Library, and Dr. Erin Webster-Garrett of the RU English Department. Guest speaker Dr. Jolanta W. Wawrzycka discussed her own lifelong love of book collecting at the awards ceremony, bringing examples from her personal collection.
