M'Ledge Moffett
Mary S. Moffett
at the Riverside School
| This is the earliest known picture of Mary S. Moffett, mother of M'Ledge Moffett, Radfords' first Dean of Women. Mary Moffett's teaching career started in a rural school near Buffalo Mills in Rockbridge County, Virginia. At the end of her first year, Rockbridge's School Superintendent asked the elder Moffett to "hold a model school 'to show teachers how to teach.'" Moffett believed that schools could best be improved through educating teachers in basic subject matter and the development of techniques which adapted content of classes to the needs of children at various age and grade levels. Her model school plan was used in Rockbridge and Augusta counties and she taught in "summer institutes in Fredericksburg, Marion, Lexington, and Tappahannock. Moffett organized the first high school in Loudoun County, Virginia. |
