Radford College
Highlander Band

| Caption 1: The band in formation makes quite a
striking sight. Their name was selected from the history and ancestral environment
of the college. The immediate area surrounding the City of Radford was settled
partly by Scotch immigrants in 1745 and the first president of the college was Dr. John
Preston McConnell, of Scotch ancestry. The kilts the girls are wearing are made of
McConnell plaid. Caption 2: Walter R. Jones, associate professor of public school music directs the 50 girls who play in the band this year. He is shown going over a score with the officers of the band. Left to right are Martha Sharitz, president; Jo Ann Kidd, vice president; Winifred Carper, librarian; and Barbara Haley, secretrary-treasurer. The band is the only one of its kind in the state [sic] of Virginia. |
