AARP Ageline - database that provides bibliographic references and original abstracts for materials related to aging and
middle age, from an interdisciplinary perspective of psychology, economics, sociology, gerontology, public policy, business, health and health care services, and consumer issues. Documents on health care and policy comprise about half the database.

AIDS/Cancer Research - Provides abstracts of scientific literature. Topics include virology, immunology and oncology.

Article First -(1990-present) contains bibliographic citations that describe items listed on the table of contents pages of more than 12,500 journals in business, humanities, medicine, popular culture, science, social science, and technology. Updated daily.

EBM Reviews: Best Evidence -  The Best Evidence Collection consists of two journals: ACP Journal Club, a publication of the American College of Physicians, and Evidence-Based Medicine, a joint publication with the British Medical Journal Group. The editors of Best Evidence screen the top clinical journals on a regular basis and identify studies that are both methodologically sound and clinically relevant. They write an enhanced abstract of the chosen articles and provide a commentary on the value of the article for clinical practice.

EBM Reviews: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews - includes the full text of the regularly updated systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare prepared by The Cochrane Collaboration.

EBM Reviews - Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE)- a full text database containing critical assessments of systematic reviews from a variety of medical journals.  DARE is produced by the expert reviewers and information staff of the National Health Services' Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (NHS CRD) at the University of York, England, and consists of structured abstracts of systematic reviews from all over the world.  DARE records cover topics such as diagnosis, prevention, rehabilitation, screening, and treatment.

Highwire Press - Offers the full-text of scientific research journals in the life sciences, medicine, physical sciences, and social sciences.  McConnell Library subscribes to the following ten journals:  Academic Psychiatry, American Journal of PsychiatryBiophysical Journal, Clinical Chemistry, Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Cell Biology, Journal of General Physiology, Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry, Molecular Biology of the Cell.  The full-text of back issues of numerous other journals are freely available from this site.  The journal Science is also available full-text.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - A full-text database providing access to a wide range of news, business, legal, medical and reference information. Medical information includes medical journals and newsletters, and access to the National Library of Medicine's Medical Abstracts index.  Full-text available

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts - Covers all aspects of the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics and syntax.

MEDLINE - index to professional medical literature.  Topics include clinical medicine, dentistry, education, experimental medicine, health services administration, nursing, nutrition, pathology, psychiatry, toxicology, and veterinary medicine. Online Journal of Knowledge Synthesis for Nursing is a peer-reviewed online journal published by Sigma Theta Tau dedicated to the scientific advancement of evidence-based practice (EBP) in health care.

PsycINFO - provides indexing for publications in psychology and related disciplines, such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, pharmacology, and physiology.

SPORT Discus - contains citations on the subjects of sports medicine, exercise physiology, biomechanics, psychology, training techniques, coaching, physical education, physical fitness, active living, recreation, history, facilities and equipment.

TOXLINE - Provides rapid access to information in all areas of toxicology, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, environmental pollutants, and mutagens and teratogens. Information is drawn from fourteen secondary sources including Toxicity Bibliography, Hazardous Materials Technical Center, Environmental Mutagen Information Center File, and Pesticides Abstracts. Codes of Ethics Online - search for Codes of Ethics in the following categories: Health Care and Service Organizations.  Site is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Community Health Status Indicators - Created by the department of Health and Human Services, this web site contains health statistics at the county level (and some independent cities for Virginia).   Each report includes statistics about population, disease, environmental health, birth/death rates, access to care, and comparisons to peer counties.

MEDLINE (free) via the National Library of Medicine: NLM now permits access free of charge on the World Wide Web to its MEDLINE database of more than 8.8 million references to articles published in 3800 biomedical journals. Two Web-based products provide this free access: (1)PubMed: contains 8.6 million MEDLINE records dating back to 1966; (2) Internet Grateful Med (IGM), in addition to MEDLINE, HealthSTAR, PREMEDLINE, and AIDSLINE, offers free access to AIDSDRUGS, AIDSTRIALS, DIRLINE, HISTLINE, HSRPROJ, OLDMEDLINE, and SDILINE.

The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy -  The 17th edition of the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy is now available on the WWW.  Users will find over 300 chapters on medical diseases, disorders, and related drug information in 23 specialties.  Entries for each disease or disorder provide information such as causes and risk factors, symptoms and diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.  The online Manual is searchable by keyword and includes hyperlinks to chapters, topics, diagrams, and tables throughout the text.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine - sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, this site provides information on complementary and alternative medicine to practitioners and the public. Search the CAM Citation Index, an index consisting of approximately 180,000 bibliographic citations from 1963 to 1998, obtained from the National Library of Medicine's Medline database.

National Center for Health Statistics - sponsored by the CDC, the NCHS is the primary US agency for vital and health statistics.  This site provides access to most of the Center's publications since 1994, selected NCHS public-use data files, and other Internet sites featuring health-related information.  Sections include "FASTATS", which provides quick access to brief statistical information by broad subject headings, and "Publications and Information Products", which includes the full-text of recent reports in selected NCHS publications.

Nutrition Navigator- The Nutrition Navigator, published by the Tufts University School of Nutrition Science and Policy, is a database of evaluated and categorized nutrition-related web sites. Each site indexed by the Nutrition Navigator has been carefully evaluated by a nutritionist and rated numerically in various categories. The site reviews contain brief descriptions, an indication of the intended audience, and other information.

Office of Research on Minority Health - sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, this site offers information on ORMH programs, publications, links to selected clinical trials, and numerous other related links.   Also includes information on the NIH Minority Health Initiative (MHI), a multi-year program aimed at "improving the health of minority Americans and research training programs designed to increase the numbers of underrepresented minorities in all aspects of biomedical and behavioral research."

Stateline.org provides state by state environmental, health, education, fiscal (taxes and welfare) and political statistics as well as news stories from the individual states. Links to agencies of individual state government are provided. The annual State of the States Report features state by state data and information on crime, education, energy, environment, homeland security, healthcare, budgets, politics and more.

Waldron/Carilion Health Screenings Information - This site is intended to serve students assisting with the health screenings provided by Carilion.  Included are links to general health web sites, indexes for finding magazine and journal articles on health issues, and web sites focusing on seven specific health issues that will be addressed in the health screening.

WHO Statistical Information System This site is a guide to health and health related epidemiological and stastical information available from the World Health Organization and elsewhere.
