ASFA: Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts - the premier reference in the field of aquatic resources, including aquaculture, conservation, environmental quality, fisheries, marine biotechnology, meteorology, oceanography and wildlife management.

Ceramic Abstracts/World Ceramic Abstracts -  a comprehensive database for the ceramics industry, providing international coverage on the manufacture, processing, applications, properties and testing of traditional and advanced ceramics.

Copper Data Center Database - an index to world's literature on copper, copper alloys and copper technology since 1965.

Corrosion Abstracts - provides the world's most complete source of bibliographic information in the area of corrosion science and engineering, including testing, corrosion characteristics, preventive measures, materials construction and performance.

Engineered Materials Abstracts - citations regarding the research, manufacturing practices, properties and applications of  polymers and ceramics.

Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management - coverage of the environmental sciences, with abstracts to scientific journals, conference proceedings, reports, monographs, books and government publications.  Topics include: agricultural biotechnology, air quality, aquatic pollution, bacteriology, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, microbiology, toxicology, water pollution, and waste management.

Expanded Academic ASAP - an excellent general database indexing magazine and journal articles covering a broad variety of subject areas, including many science fields.  Some full-text available

GEOBASE - worldwide literature on geography, geology, ecology, and related areas.

GeoRef - the most comprehensive database in the geosciences, GeoRef covers the geology of North America from 1785 to the present and the geology of the rest of the world from 1933 to the present.

Highwire Press - Offers the full-text of scientific research journals in the life sciences, medicine, physical sciences, and social sciences.  McConnell Library subscribes to the following ten journals:  Academic Psychiatry, American Journal of PsychiatryBiophysical Journal, Clinical Chemistry, Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Cell Biology, Journal of General Physiology, Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry, Molecular Biology of the Cell.  The full-text of back issues of numerous other journals are freely available from this site.  The journal Science is also available full-text.

JSTOR - searchable database of the backfiles of selected journals in several subject areas, including ecology.  Full-text available

Maps101 Academic - features over 4,000 maps, including U.S. and world maps, and historical, outline, and thematic maps. Also includes: Geography in the news; United States reference atlas; World reference atlas; and games related to maps and geography.

Materials Business File - focuses on industry news, international trade data, government regulations and management issues related to the metals and materials industries.

Mechanical & Transportation Engineering Abstracts - provides citations, abstracts, and indexing of the serials literature in mechanical and transportation engineering and their complementary fields, including forensic engineering, management and marketing of engineering services, engineering education, theoretical mechanics and dynamics, and mathematics and computation. This database provides in depth, comprehensive coverage of the international engineering literature with the monitoring of over 2,600 serial titles as well as numerous non-serial publications. METADEX - indexes journals, patents, dissertations, government reports, conference proceedings, and books on the properties, manufacturing, applications, and development of metals and alloys.

Oceanic Abstracts -  focused exclusively on worldwide technical literature pertaining to the marine and brackish-water environment, including marine biology, physical oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture, non-living resources, meteorology, and geology, as well as environmental, technological, and legislative topics.

Population Index - primary index for world's population literature, including recently published books, journal articles, working papers, and other materials on population topics. Some full-text available

Scholarly Communications Project - a project at Virginia Tech dedicated to making publications available online.  Several scientific electronic journals are included. Full-text available

TOXLINE - contains abstracts to journal articles, monographs, technical reports, theses, letters, meeting abstracts, papers and reports in all areas of toxicology, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, environmental pollutants, and mutagens and teratogens.

Water Resources Abstracts - provides summaries of the world's technical and scientific literature on water-related topics covering the characteristics, conservation, control, pollution, treatment, use and management of water resources.  Abstracts are drawn from journals, books, conference proceedings, and technical reports in the physical and life sciences, as well as from engineering, legal and government publications.

WELDASEARCH -  contains abstracts to journal articles, research reports, books, standards, patents, theses and special publications in the areas of joining metals, plastics and ceramics, metal and ceramic spraying, thermal cutting, brazing, and soldering.

Conference Papers Index - provides citations to papers and poster sessions presented at major scientific meetings around the world.  Subject emphasis since 1995 has been in the life sciences, environmental sciences and the aquatic sciences, while older material also covers physics, engineering and materials science.

ChemCenter:  A Service of the American Chemical Society - a virtual library of chemistry resources that have been validated by experts, ChemCenter links to major Web resources developed by the American Chemical Society scientific associations, publishers, vendors of information services, universities, and others.  The information contained on this site includes educational resources, career information, chemistry databases, professional meetings, and more.

Digital Library for Earth System Education is a grassroots, community-based effort involving teachers, students, and scientists working together to create a library of educational resources and services to support Earth system science education, at all levels, in both formal and informal settings. DLESE resources include electronic materials for both teachers and learners such as lesson plans, maps, images, data sets, visualizations, assessment activities, curriculum, online courses and much more.

Earthref.org Provvides searchable databases of peer reviewed seismic, magnetic and chemical data and accompanying reference literature and online modeling tools for data manipulation Recent conference papers, abstracts and reports are included. Adigital object archive is being developed.

Ecoregions of the United States and Ecological Subregions of the United States - these Web sites are sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service. Ecoregions of the U.S. contains color maps of generalized ecological boundaries.  The companion site, Ecological Subregions of the U.S., contains the biophysical descriptions for the color-coded maps. Both sites are good resources for anyone seeking broad ecosystem classifications for the U.S.

Encyclopedia Astronautica- Comprehensive reference for the history of space flight from 1930 to the present. Includes profiles of American, Russian, and European rockets, other launch vehicles, spacecraft, and launch sites, with descriptions, drawings (or maps), and photos of each. Additional resources are a chronology of events for each year, details about the major manned projects, brief biographies and flight assignments of astronauts and cosmonauts, and an annotated bibliography of both print and Web resources.

European Space Agency Created to promote and provide for European coopearion in space research, space technology and space exploration. Site provides current information about European activities in these areas and access to ESA Publications..

Global Warming Maintained by US Environmental Protection Agency this site has current information on the climate system; greenhouse gas emissions; impacts of climate change; and actions that can be taken at the national, state, local, business, and individual levels.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory Managed for NASA by the California Institute of Technology JPL is the leading US center for robotic exploration of the solar system. The site llinks to information about space exploration and discovery.

laboratory, with a mission to ensure national security and apply science and
technology to the important issues of our time. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is a national research laboratory run by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy..The Los Alamos lab is a major research complex, including extraordinarily powerful supercomputers, more than 50 cross-disciplinary facilities and a leading role in the development of the human genome map.

NASA Planetary Resource Discoveries-  an educational site devoted to sharing discoveries being made in planetary and space sciences through NASA-sponsored research.

Radford University Spatial Data Analysis Lab - Through this web site, Radford University makes available a number of spatial data sources covering Virginia and some surrounding states, including access to thousands of digital US Geological Survey maps owned by RU as well as hundreds of  high resolution aerial photography of Virginia.

Watersheds of the World Maintained by IUCN-The World Conservation Union, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the Ramsar Convention Bureau, and the World Resources Institute (WRIT) this site provides maps of land cover, population density and biodiversity for 154 basins and sub-basins around the world. It lists indicators and variables for each of these basins and, where appropriate, provides links and references to relevant information. It further contains 20 global maps portraying relevant water resources issues
